Negative symptoms remain one of the major unmet needs for people with schizophrenia, and the past decade has witnessed a surge in interest in negative symptoms. In this themed issue, we present new concepts of negative symptoms and recent findings on their epidemiology and pathophysiology and on therapeutic options for their management.

Indigenous peoples and ethnic minority groups often experience poor diet quality and poor health outcomes. Such inequities may be partially due to nutrition interventions not meeting the unique cultural and linguistic needs of these population groups, which could be achieved using co-creation and/or personalised approaches. Cultural adaptation or tailoring of nutrition interventions has shown promise in improving some aspects of dietary intake, but this requires careful consideration to ensure it does not inadvertently exacerbate dietary inequities. The aim of this narrative review was to examine examples of cultural adaptations and/or tailoring of public health nutrition interventions that improved the dietary intake and to consider implications for the optimal design and implementation of personalised and precision nutrition interventions. This review identified six examples of cultural adaptation and/or tailoring of public health nutrition intervention in Indigenous peoples and ethnic minority groups across Australia, Canada and the US. All studies used deep socio-cultural adaptations, such as the use of Indigenous storytelling, and many included surface-level adaptations, such as the use of culturally appropriate imagery in intervention materials. However, it was not possible to attribute any improvements in dietary intake to cultural adaptation and/or tailoring per se, and the minimal reporting on the nature of adaptations limited our ability to determine whether the interventions used true co-creation to design content or were adapted from existing interventions. Findings from this review outline opportunities for personalised nutrition interventions to use co-creation practices to design, deliver and implement interventions in collaboration with Indigenous and ethnic minority groups.

To sustain star formation rates (SFRs) of hundreds to thousands of solar masses per year over millions of years, a galaxy must efficiently cool its gas. At z ∼ 2, the peak epoch for stellar mass assembly, tracers of gas heating and cooling remain largely unexplored. For one z ∼ 2 starburst galaxy GS IRS20, we present Spitzer IRS spectroscopy of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, and ALMA observations of [C II] 158 μm fine-structure emission which we use to probe ISM heating/cooling. Coupled with an unusually warm dust component, the ratio of [C II] /PAH emission suggests a low photolelectric efficiency, and/or the importance of cooling from other far-IR lines in this galaxy. A low photoelectric efficiency at z ∼ 2 could be key for the peak in the SFR density of the universe by decoupling stellar radiation from ISM gas temperatures.

Simulation models are used widely in pharmacology, epidemiology and health economics (HEs). However, there have been no attempts to incorporate models from these disciplines into a single integrated model. Accordingly, we explored this linkage to evaluate the epidemiological and economic impact of oseltamivir dose optimisation in supporting pandemic influenza planning in the USA. An HE decision analytic model was linked to a pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) – dynamic transmission model simulating the impact of pandemic influenza with low virulence and low transmissibility and, high virulence and high transmissibility. The cost-utility analysis was from the payer and societal perspectives, comparing oseltamivir 75 and 150 mg twice daily (BID) to no treatment over a 1-year time horizon. Model parameters were derived from published studies. Outcomes were measured as cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained. Sensitivity analyses were performed to examine the integrated model's robustness. Under both pandemic scenarios, compared to no treatment, the use of oseltamivir 75 or 150 mg BID led to a significant reduction of influenza episodes and influenza-related deaths, translating to substantial savings of QALYs. Overall drug costs were offset by the reduction of both direct and indirect costs, making these two interventions cost-saving from both perspectives. The results were sensitive to the proportion of inpatient presentation at the emergency visit and patients’ quality of life. Integrating PK/PD–EPI/HE models is achievable. Whilst further refinement of this novel linkage model to more closely mimic the reality is needed, the current study has generated useful insights to support influenza pandemic planning.

Atran & Norenzayan (A&N) are correct that religion is an evolutionary by-product, not an adaptation, but they do not go far enough. Once supernatural beliefs are enabled by processes they describe, numerous social-cognitive mechanisms related to attachment, social exchange, coalitional psychology, status and dominance, and kinship are crucial for explaining the specific forms religion takes and individual and cultural differences therein.

We present the results of a deep, optical/IR wide field imaging survey of selected fields in the nearby (d~ 140 pc) Taurus star-forming region. We report the discovery of 9 new members with spectral types M5.75–M9.5. We derive an Initial Mass Function encompassing 54% of the known members in Taurus. Comparison with dense regions like the Trapezium Cluster in Orion shows that Taurus has produced x2 less brown dwarfs. We suggest that the lower frequency of brown dwarfs in Taurus may result from the low-density star-forming environment, leading to larger minimum Jeans masses.

A broad evolutionary perspective is essential to fully reverse figure and ground in the rationality debate. Humans' evolved psychological architecture was designed to produce inferences that were adaptive, not normatively logical. This perspective points to several predictable sources of errors in modern laboratory reasoning tasks, including inherent, systematic biases in information-processing systems explained by Error Management Theory.

Polycrystalline Si (poly-Si) waveguides offer design flexibility and multilayered structures in Si-integrated photonic devices. However, as-deposited poly-Si surfaces are rough compared with single-crystalline Si, and a rough surface causes significant waveguide scattering loss at the surface. In this study, surface smoothing of poly-Si waveguides with a gas-cluster ion beam (GCIB) was demonstrated as a new smoothing technique. As the GCIB process is a directional ion-beam process, in principle it can be applied not only to plane surfaces but also to three-dimensional or non-flat structures, such as waveguide ridges.
The initial average roughness of as-deposited poly-Si films (625°C, 1 μm thick) ranged from 15 nm to 22 nm, and the grain sizes were distributed from 0.2 to 0.4μm. This rough surface was dramatically smoothed to a roughness of 1.5 nm by Ar cluster ion irradiation. From the relation between the sputtered depth and the surface roughness, the sputtered depth must be greater than the height difference of the roughness (peak-to-valley) to obtain smooth surfaces. Optical transmission losses at λ =1.54 μm were measured using cutback measurement from samples before and after the smoothing by GCIB. After surface smoothing with GCIB, the optical loss decreased from 85 dB/cm to 54 dB/cm.

Our study shows that the isolation—degradation in semi—insulating GaAs substrate is closely related to dry—processes during the device fabrication. It was found that EL2, the major electron trap in undoped LEC semiinsulating GaAs, could be passivated by plasma—assisted etchings or depositions. The passivation of EL2 causessurface leakage and leads to crosstalk in GaAs ICs.
